Carly Glovinski Named Inaugural Artist Fellow at The Annex
The Gund at Kenyon College is excited to introduce New Hampshire-based artist Carly Glovinski, who will join us as our inaugural Summer Fellow at The Annex. In this role, Glovinski will work closely with our partner organizations, the Brown Family Environmental Center and Philander Chase Conservancy, over the course of three months to explore central Ohio’s diverse landscape and meet with local plant experts, educators, and enthusiasts. Glovinski will use this research to inform a pressed-flower mural, which she will install on the walls of The Annex, our satellite space in downtown Mount Vernon.
Rooted in observation and fueled by a curiosity about the history of objects and handicraft processes, Carly Glovinski makes work that reveres nature and explores the make-do, resourceful attitudes associated with domestic craft. Working in a variety of mediums, Glovinski says, “The rhythm of life matters in my work, sometimes in the subject itself, and sometimes in the process.” Most recently, she has created monumental, painted pressed-flower murals inspired by seasonal blooms she has gathered, or been given, and then pressed. From highlighting native plants and flowers to sharing innovative techniques for preserving them, Carly's work explores the deep connections between local flora and the communities that care for them. Her practice serves as both a memory of time and a commentary on the labor of care involved in observing, tending, and preserving these flowers.
“Plants for me, as a visual artist, are a real barometer of time and process. They become a symbol of the ongoing change that happens in the course of life. They’re a real compass.”
Throughout her stay, The Gund will host a variety of public programs in collaboration with the Brown Family Environmental Center, the Philander Chase Conservancy and other partners. Please join us for special workshops on making paper flowers, wildflower seed paper, flower arranging, and more.
